“I’m gonna be with you tomorrow,” he said.

“Tomorrow?” I asked.

“You have to come in,” she said. “There’s something I want to tell you.”

“But first, I got to talk to you.”

“I’ll talk to you tomorrow, if I can manage it. But I’ll be with you no more than an hour.”

“I’m sorry,” I said. “If it bothers you, I’ll come back to you again tomorrow. But if I can, I want to talk to you.”

“I think I can do it.”

“I know that, too.”

“Then let me tell you the story.”

She spoke in a flat voice. “When I was a kid, I had a friend who used to come to my house every weekend. In those days, the people you could see at my house were the same as the people in the movies you could see in the movies you could see in the movies you could see in the movies you could see in the movies. So if you had one of those movies with a bunch of characters, the only difference was that they were all women and mostly women.” She paused for a moment. “The women in those movies all looked the same to me. They all looked like their bodies were the same.”

My eyes narrowed, and I said, “I know this has been a complicated affair, but I know I need not feel like I’m asking you to go on and read my story.”

“No, I’ll just tell it,” she said. “Just the first part. It’s a story about my family, and the way that I…
